Frequently asked questions

Why is my payslip slightly different?

Employers use the ATO withholding schedules, which work per pay period and round to whole dollars. Over a year those roundings drift a little from the exact annual calculation, and the difference is settled in your tax return. Any variance is normally in the ATO's favour during the year, so it comes back as a refund.

Does salary sacrificing into super actually save me money?

It converts income taxed at your marginal rate into a contribution taxed at 15% inside the fund, so the higher your marginal rate the bigger the gap. Two catches: the amount still counts towards HELP repayment income and the Medicare levy surcharge, and it counts towards your concessional cap. Above $250,000 of income plus contributions, Division 293 lifts the contributions tax to 30% and halves the benefit.

What changed on 1 July 2026?

The 16% rate that applies between $18,201 and $45,000 dropped to 15%. Because that band is $26,800 wide, the maximum benefit is about $268 a year and everyone earning over $45,000 gets the full amount. It falls again to 14% from 1 July 2027.

Is the super guarantee on top of my salary?

It depends how the role was advertised. An advertised base salary normally has super paid on top, while a "total remuneration package" figure includes it. Use the toggle to switch between the two - on a $100,000 figure the difference in take-home pay is thousands.
